An ancient ginkgo tree in the botanical garden of the University of Marburg quietly accompanies the lives of three individuals whose paths cross its sanctuary across different eras. The ginkgo stands in the garden in the early 20th century as Grete, the university’s trailblazing first female biology student, seeks to uncover nature’s hidden order through plant photography. In the 1970s, the tree bears silent witness to Hannes, a withdrawn student who forms a bond with a geranium, on which the girl he is in love with is conducting experiments. By 2020, a visiting professor from Hong Kong, stranded on campus by pandemic restrictions, conducts an experiment on the ancient tree while researching the development of infant brains.

Appealing first and foremost to the heart and the senses, this deeply moving, multi-layered narrative reveals how humanity’s fundamental curiosity to explore is intimately shaped by the natural world.
