Forget Lord of the Flies. In contrast to the reflections adults project onto children’s worlds, Red Rocks depicts the spirit of play and camaraderie shared by a group of children at a summer resort - told consistently through the children’s eyes and in the raw, unadorned style that is director Bruno Dumont’s signature. Under the scorching Mediterranean sun, there are very few adults around - only those who serve a functional purpose. Gang leader Geo could be considered the youngest of the misfits, outcasts, and oddball heroes found throughout Dumont’s work. Aside from his forbidden desire to jump from the highest rock, Geo is uniquely able to inspire others to do the same. This young ringleader remains open not only to victories but also to defeats.

At a time when The Odyssey enjoys a renewed resonance, Dumont delivers his own answer to what it means to be a hero, set in more or less the same geography.
