We are all more than familiar with films in which an unexpected death shatters a family and the grieving process leads the characters on a journey of self-discovery. Sandra Wollner’s Everytime takes this theme and pushes it to an entirely unexpected place. With a narrative and style that shift just when you think the story is heading in a predictable direction, Everytime keeps the audience guessing right up to the very end. Wollner approaches death and grief not from a melodramatic angle, but as an elliptical process and a profound experience. At times, it may remind viewers of other recent landmarks - particularly Aftersun, thanks to the shared cinematography of Gregory Oke - but Every Time is a mysterious film that refuses to fully reveal itself in a single viewing, just as the image of the square sun suspended in the sky on its poster suggests.
