Suna, a musician who returns to her village years later for her niece’s wedding, tries to elicit a confession from Bekir, a man suffering from dementia whom she suspects of murdering her sister. While Bekir’s silence is dictated by his illness, the rest of the village is willfully silent, refusing to dredge up the past and disrupt their peace. Centered around this story, Hear the Yellow offers a fresh perspective on the familiar themes in Turkish cinema of returning to the countryside and the fantasy of "finding innocence there." Just as returning to the province is no guarantee of innocence, the complex structure known as "family" stands in the way of our female protagonist. The complexity of the family is as deep-rooted and tenacious as a plant entwined around the foundation of an ancestral home, bound by shackles of guilt, regret, and exhaustion. Perhaps the best thing that can happen when returning to the family home is to rescue something—or someone—that still represents hope.
