Saadet still has not gotten over her husband’s death. Everything reminds her of him, and he, in turn, reminds her of Atatürk. The characters we encounter across the film’s segments, which has an episodic structure, gradually come together around Saadet, ultimately leading to a grand birthday party thrown for the husband and father.
Ziya Demirel’s tragicomic film offers a poignant, sometimes satirical portrait of contemporary Turkey and its middle class. Blending middle-aged Facebook users, their influencer children, and online scammers, The Greatest Funeral Hits constantly juxtaposes weighty themes like death, loneliness, and unrequited desire with the absurd. Ultimately, the lines between mourning and laughter, wanting to be loved and being deceived, and drawing closer to someone and drifting apart become completely blurred.
