Bi Gan’s Resurrection is a profound reflection on cinema itself as a medium. It underscores that film is not merely a tool for straightforward storytelling, but a visual art form whose very essence is woven from dreams. The director invites the audience into a captivating fantasy: humanity has discovered that the secret to immortality lies in ceasing to dream. Those who refuse to give up dreaming, however, are ostracized from society and regarded as monsters. One such monster manages to live for a century by hiding inside movies.
Each dream we witness corresponds to a different filming technique or genre from the history of cinema. Ultimately, the question that ties together the sections in Resurrection - which features an episodic narrative - is this: in a world where it is debated that cinema, at least as we know it, is coming to an end, why do dreaming and storytelling remain so entirely indispensable?
